Baku-APA. A Venezuelan opposition party says one of its regional officials was shot to death at a campaign rally for next week's congressional elections, APA reports quoting Associated Press.
Democratic Action party leader Carolos Prosperi tells The Associated Press that the shooting happened Wednesday night in the central Venezuela town of Altagracia de Orituco in Guarico state. Prosperi says he heard gunshots as the rally was breaking up and the party's leader for the town, Luis Manuel Diaz, was hit.
The elections Dec. 6 are being fiercely contested as the opposition mounts one of its strongest challenges yet to Venezuela's socialist government amid severe economic problems in the oil-exporting country.
