National Election Commission announced that 50.7 percent voted against amendments.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s proposals envisage amending the country’s constitution, which would have allowed him to run for re-election indefinitely. Chavez offered 33 amendments to the constitution, which included subordinating Central Bank to president, establishing new provinces, shortening the work day to six hours and giving people under 16 the right to vote.
Despite the tempting proposals, only 49.2% of voters supported the amendments. 16 million people attended the referendum. No serious irregularities were found. /APA/
