The first lunar eclipse of 2018 began today.
Khidir Mikayilov, Deputy Director of Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasiraddin Tusi for Scientific Affairs of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told APA that the eclipse begins at 15:48 (Baku time), will reach a maximum at 17:29, and end at 19:11.
In Azerbaijan, the lunar eclipse will be visible from 18:00, when the Moon’s surface will start to slowly begin to be seen from the bottom.
Mikayilov noted that as the Moon appear reddish during an eclipse, this phenomenon is usually called “Blood Moon” eclipse. “‘Super Lunar Eclipse’ will be observed on January 1. Today’s is not a ‘Super Lunar Eclipse’,” he said.
The deputy director noted that the eclipse will occur in the Earth’s equatorial zone.
