Of the average 170,000 babies born in Azerbaijan per year, nearly 1,700 die, Rustam Huseynov, chief neonatologist at the country’s Health Ministry, told APA on Wednesday.
According to him, after Azerbaijan applied the new criteria for live birth in 2015, the death rate went up by 0.8%.
“However, this increase was experienced that year only and began going down in 2016. On the new criteria, the number of surviving babies experienced twofold increase. In 2015, 96 survived of 267 babies, but in the first half of this year 106 babies have survived,” he added.
