He said the heavy downpour that fell in the country’s parts of the Greater Caucasus, the Lesser Caucasus and Talysh Mountains on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of October have brought about a number of consequences.

“There were mudflows and floods in rivers in the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, namely the Turyanchay, Goychay, Girdimanchay, and Aghsu rivers, in many of the river valleys in the Goranboy and Goygol districts as well as in rivers in the Lenkeran region and Talysh Mountains. Farmlands in Goychay and Goranboy were affected the most,” he said.

“Unfortunately, our prognosis proved accurate. As predicted, there was intensive rainfall in Azerbaijan since the first days of the fall, following the summer that passed mostly arid"

The deputy director added that the institute’s summer prognosis of the likelihood of mudflows and floods proved accurate.

“Unfortunately, our prognosis proved accurate. As predicted, there has been intensive rainfall in Azerbaijan since the first days of the fall, following the summer that passed mostly arid. The Geography Institute predicted that if it is hot and dry in summer, materials ready to be transported will be collected in flood lands and river valleys in the mountainous areas. Then, if it rains very hard in autumn, floods and mudslides will be inevitable and predictable in most mountain rivers of Azerbaijan. It should be noted that the floods are mudslides were caused by failure in carrying out important preventive measures after the long summer, thus in cleaning of water transmission facilities, especially communication lines carrying rainwater in urban areas, and river valleys”, he said.

Alizadeh said that preventive measures should be accelerated to minimize the scale of possible damage to be caused by floods in autumn.

“It is possible to reduce the potential damage by ensuring the repair of flood protective dikes, repair of dams in lowland rivers, especially in the River Kur or their construction in necessary places”, he added.
