The head of the Intra-national Liberation Movement Vahan Martirosyan, who earlier asked Azerbaijan for political asylum, said he, with the help of the Azerbaijani media, aims to draw the attention of the international community and Armenian diaspora to the criminal regime of Sargsyan.
Vahan Martirosyan made the remarks at a press conference in Baku on Sept. 18.
He said that Armenia continues creating a image of hostility from Azerbaijan. “I was friendly and hospitably received in Azerbaijan after my appeal to get political asylum.”
He spoke about the prosecution and pressure he faced in Armenia. “I was prosecuted for my activity as a public and human rights defender. The situation reached its peak when on August 14 this year a close friend of Sargsyan attacked me in my own house and beat me in front of my family and elderly mother. My wife was beaten, and lost her unborn child. My mother was subjected to pressure. Fake documents were drafted via medical agencies to persuade that we were not beaten,” Martirosyan noted.
The human rights defender said that there is no opposition in Armenia. “5000 people protesting against rising electricity prices in Armenia closed Bagramyan Avenue and stayed there for a while. I know most of them, they were not working anywhere. Now they bought expensive cars. They are going to expensive restaurants. We do not have opposition. The latter opposition was seen in March 2008, the rest are pocket opposition,” he stressed.
Vahan Emilyevich Martirosyan, together with his wife and underage child fled Armenia for Azerbaijan to seek political asylum to protect himself and his family.
He has been prosecuted by Armenian state authorities and various officials for the activities of the pro-opposition Intra-national Liberation Movement which he leads.
