Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. “Reports are untrue of the ISIL group closing in on the Turkey-Nakhchivan border towards Azerbaijan and pro-ISIL radicals in Azerbaijan concentrating around particular persons,” Chairman of the State Committee on Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbali said in a statement to APA.
M. Gurbanli said he regrets the fact that some media outlets tend to present some radical religious figures as leaders and publish their statements, and by this means they form fallacious opinions in society. The committee chairman noted that ISIL is not only in the spotlight in the region but also the whole world, adding that ISIL has or can have no stronghold and no social base in Azerbaijan.
“If some minor radical group is imitating ISIL theses here it does not necessarily mean they have a stronghold in Azerbaijan. Some radical ISIL-affiliated groups are trying to expand in the North Caucasus and Azerbaijan, and win supporters [in this region]. There are attempts. But they should know that these attempts will be prevented decisively. Moreover, our law enforcement agencies are taking high-level preventive measures on the matter. And our educative ideological efforts are playing a key role too,” said Mubariz Gurbanli.
He also stressed that there are certain radical forces in Azerbaijan.
“Our joint actions with other authorities against them are yielding quite positive results. We are preventing and will continue to prevent these groups from propagating [their ideology] at mosques. We’re working with the Caucasian Muslims Office. As for those recruiting members for radical groups and directly propagating terrorist organizations, they are dealt with by related authorities,” said the committee chairman.
