The migration service in Russia’s Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad provinces registered a massive return of migrants, APA’s Russian bureau reports.

According to the information, it was noted that migrants from mainly Azerbaijan, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were leaving Russia and returning to their homelands.

According to the information provided by press service of the Main Department of Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of foreigners in the region has decreased by 12 thousand people during the year.

PhD candidate in sociology Julia Bayer told 78.ru that there could be two reasons for migrants to leave Russia. These are the decline of the exchange rate of ruble and the fear of being enlisted into the war, which means staying in Russia is not profitable for foreigners.
