Baku Port’s container capacity currently stands at 150,000 TEU. Before the first phase, this figure was 100,000 TEU. In the near future, the capacity is planned to be increased to 260,000 TEU, Khudayar Hasanli, Adviser to Baku Port, said during a panel discussion held as part of the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
According to him, in the second phase, Baku Port’s total cargo handling capacity is planned to be increased to 25 million tons, while container handling capacity is expected to reach 500,000 TEU.
Khudayar Hasanli noted that routes passing through Baku Port include the China–Kazakhstan–Caspian Sea–Azerbaijan–West route, as well as the Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan–Azerbaijan route: “Last year, a significant share of cargo handled at Baku Port arrived from Turkmenistan’s ports. Currently, the main focus is on transporting cargo from Central Asia, including fertilizers. It is planned to expand the port’s capacity for handling general cargo and fertilizers. The aim is to increase the volume of cargo coming from Central Asia and strengthen Baku Port’s role as one of the region’s main logistics hubs."
