The UN Human Rights Council on April 5 adopted a resolution demanding a halt in all arms sales to Israel, highlighting warnings of “genocide” in its war in Gaza that has left more than 33,000 people dead, APA reports citing The Straits Times.
Israel dismissed it as a “distorted text”.
Twenty-eight of the council’s 47 member states voted in favour, 13 abstained and six voted against the resolution, including the United States and Germany.
The resolution stressed “the need to ensure accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in order to end impunity”.
It also expressed “grave concern at reports of serious human rights violations and grave breaches of international humanitarian law, including of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territory”.
It stressed that the International Court of Justice ruled in January “that there is a plausible risk of genocide” in Gaza.

The United Nations Human Rights Council will tomorrow consider a draft resolution calling for an arms embargo on Israel, APA reports citing foreign media.
If the draft resolution is adopted, it will be the first position taken by the Human Rights Council since the Gaza war started.
Pakistan submitted the text on behalf of 55 of the 56 UN member states who form part of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), except Albania. The draft resolution is also co-sponsored by Bolivia, Cuba, and the Palestinian mission in Geneva.
The eight-page draft demands that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territory and immediately lift its “illegal blockade” on the Gaza Strip and all other forms of “collective punishment”.
It calls upon countries to stop the sale or transfer of arms, munitions, and other military equipment to Israel.
