The day of World Mental Health is held on October 10 and this year it will be paid a special attention to.
A coalition of non-governmental groups has made an important statement concerning mentally ill people. The way such patients is treated is totally inhumane.
A common practice of shackling and other kinds of maltreatment are absolutely intolerable nowadays. It must be eliminated as soon as possible. Such people require a special attitude and a finical support plays an important role here.
That is why Mental Health Society of Ghana, Human Rights Watch, BasicNeeds Ghana, Anti-Torture Initiative and others call to action the finance minister. The coalition declared that the government should impose a tax in order to maintain services of mental health.
Levy should be set with the aim of funding establishments where mentally disabled people are as YEN GHANA reports. It was stated so in the Mental Health Act (2012). The coalition hope that the parliament will get down to the legislative bill pretty soon.
According to Julian Eaton (the senior mental health advisor at GCB) mentally ill people are not considered to be people by locals who chain them and don’t care at all how they will spend the rest of their lives. It is so unfair and abominable. The mentally ill deserve the same decent attitude.
