Switzerland on Monday offered to play a mediation role to help resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

"We are ready to offer our role for good services as a mediator. I think in the upcoming weeks a lot will depend on how the U.S. and China can have an influence in this crisis," Doris Leuthard told a press conference in Bern on Monday.

Saying that to date sanctions against North Korea have had little effect in ending the nuclear threat, Leuthard added, "The population suffers for all the sanctions."

"It is really time for dialogue," she said.

Leuthard also warned against overreactions by the U.S. and China over the threat.

North Korea claimed to have detonated a new hydrogen bomb Sunday, confirming suspicions of the reclusive state's sixth-ever nuclear test.

Pyongyang's official KCNA news agency announced that its "perfect" test involved a hydrogen bomb that could be mounted on a North Korean ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile).
