The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation has detained seven people on suspicion of preparing a series of terrorist acts in St. Petersburg. All the seven people are citizens of Central Asian countries, RIA Novosti said on its website.

The Federal Security Service said it carried out a special operation on Friday to detain the potential terrorists. The detainees are said to have planned to carry out a series of explosions at railway stations and other crowded public places.

The FSS has not revealed the identity of the detainees yet.

Russia’s prosecutor general’s office said law enforcement agencies have so far prevented a total of 12 terrorist acts this year.

On April 3, 2017, a suicide bomber detonated himself at a subway station in St. Petersburg, killing 16 people. An Azerbaijani was killed and another one injured in the blast.
