Istanbul. Mayis Alizade – APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for intensified efforts to ensure the safety of humanitarian aid workers.

Addressing the round table held as part of the UN Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Ban Ki-moon noted that to date as many as 238 humanitarian aid workers have been kidnapped and killed, APA's correspondent reported.

“For over 50 years we have been trying to protect people around the world. But now we need the support of world countries more than ever,” the UN chief said, stressing that due to obstacles created by terrorist organizations, the Geneva Convention seems to lose its force.

He urged world leaders to assist those who are in need of help throughout the world.

Ban Ki-moon added that the decision on assistance which will be adopted by world leaders today will be very important for future activities.

The World Humanitarian Summit, organized by the UN, opened in Turkey’s Istanbul on May 23. The heads of state and government from 185 countries are attending the summit.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev is also participating in the summit.
