Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu said in an interview with the website kavpolit.ru, APA reported.
According to him, the city of Baku did a lot for victory in the Great Patriotic War.
“There’s a saying that it was wars of engines. It’s clear that engines do not function without fuel. Baku used to work 24 hours a day for victory. Not only that, about 660,000 people from Azerbaijan were called to arms. The Azerbaijani population at that time was 5 million. Women and children left behind used to work for the war without resting. Engineers were held back due to the need for oil extraction. But they were still looking for a way to go to the front line. In that difficult period, new generation aircrafts had to be provided with high-octane fuel. Chemist Yusif Mammadaliyev invented a special substance which increases petrol gasoline’s octane,” said P. Bulbuloglu.
The ambassador noted that giving the status of Hero City to Baku would be quite fair.
“Today, we live in different countries. But if Baku is given the status of Hero City, it would be a respect to the people who lost their lives working day and night. And also, it would be a reminder that we have won the war together. The winner of the war is not just the Russians but all Soviet Union citizens. So I think that giving the status of Hero City to Baku would be an important socio-political act. It would be quite appropriate to remember the contributors of the victory,” the diplomat stressed.
