A nuclear cooperation agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia could eventually allow uranium enrichment to levels of up to 20%, according to The Wall Street Journal, APA reports.
The details are contained in a document submitted to the US Congress for review.
According to the report, the agreement does not automatically authorize Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium. However, it outlines a process that could pave the way for the establishment of an enrichment facility in the Kingdom within several years.
During the first two years, US and Saudi officials are expected to assess the economic feasibility of uranium enrichment and examine measures aimed at addressing nuclear proliferation risks.
If the two sides conclude that enrichment is necessary, US companies, together with foreign suppliers, could construct a facility capable of enriching uranium to a level of up to 5%. The enrichment level could subsequently be increased to nearly 20%.
The Wall Street Journal also noted that the agreement does not require Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel or join the Abraham Accords.
The US Department of Energy announced on July 22 that Washington and Riyadh had signed an agreement under which the United States would support Saudi Arabia's peaceful nuclear energy program.
