Oscar Temaru, President of Tavini Huiraatira, which is fighting for the independence of Maohi Nui (French Polynesia), has prepared a statement on the full sovereignty of his country, APA reports.
This was stated in information released by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
It was noted that the statement will be presented in October in New York within the framework of the meetings of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly on Political Affairs and Decolonization.
Oscar Temaru said that ending Maohi Nui’s current political and institutional dependence on France, enabling the people to freely determine their own future, and beginning the process of building a sovereign state are among the main objectives.
In his opinion, the issue of the territory’s decolonization has become part of the international agenda, and activities in this direction should be continued within the framework of the UN.
The information recalled that French Polynesia was re-inscribed on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories by a decision of the UN General Assembly in 2013.
Oscar Temaru also plans to launch a petition to demonstrate public support for Maohi Nui’s independence. It is reported that the petition aims to demonstrate the political will of the population to the international community.
The organization supports the Maohi Nui people’s right to self-determination and the decolonization process on international platforms.
It was reported that a document on cooperation between the Baku Initiative Group and the Tavini Huiraatira Party was signed at the UN Office in Vienna on April 26, 2024.
The BIG’s information also emphasized that the nuclear tests conducted by France in French Polynesia in previous years had caused severe consequences for the local population and the environment.
