"The cause of death of the Caspian seals (Phoca caspica) discovered along the Caspian Sea in the south Russian province of Dagestan is currently being investigated by experts from Caspian countries. Samples were taken from the carcasses for bacteriological and virological analysis," said the Head of the Biodiversity Protection Service under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR), Firuddin Aliyev, APA reports.
He said that the cause of death would be determined after laboratory studies of the pathological material taken from seals.
"We have not recorded any dead seal in the part of the Caspian Sea belonging to Azerbaijan, but such a situation can be expected in the near future. Thus, seal carcasses can be brought from Dagestan to the northern shores of the Absheron Peninsula by sea currents."
