Azerbaijan marks III anniversary of liberation of city of Shusha from occupation

Today is the 3rd anniversary of the liberation of the city of Shusha from occupation, APA reports.

Shusha was liberated from occupation on November 8, 2020, as a result of a counter-attack launched by the Azerbaijani Army on September 27, 2020.

President of Azerbaijan, Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev announced the good news of the liberation of Shusha from occupation in his address to the nation from the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.

The head of state said: "Dear fellow countrymen, dear sisters and brothers!

It is with great pride that I declare that the city of Shusha has been liberated from occupation! Shusha is ours! Karabakh is ours! I heartily congratulate all the people of Azerbaijan on this occasion. I heartily congratulate all the people of Shusha. Shusha, which was under occupation for 28 and a half years, has been liberated! Shusha is free now! We have returned to Shusha! We have won this historic victory on the battlefield. 8 November 2020 will forever remain in the history of Azerbaijan. This history will live forever. This is the day of our glorious victory!"

The President said that it was not accidental that he announced the liberation of Shusha from occupation from the Alley of Martyrs: "Dear sisters and brothers, today I give this good news to my native people here in the Alley of Martyrs. This is not accidental. This is natural. Today, I bow once again to the souls of our martyrs. Today I declare that the blood of our martyrs does not remain unavenged. The blood of the victims of Armenian atrocities, the victims of Khojaly, does not remain unavenged. We took our revenge on the battlefield."

In his address, the head of state stressed that he had fulfilled his father's will by liberating Shusha from occupation: “Today, I also visited the grave of great leader Heydar Aliyev and paid my respects. I said in my heart, I am happy to have fulfilled my father's will. We have liberated Shusha! This is a great victory! The souls of our martyrs and the Great Leader are happy today! Congratulations, Azerbaijan! Congratulations, Azerbaijanis of the world!”

Azerbaijani President, Victorious Commander-in-Chief completed his address with these words:

“Dear Shusha, you are free!

Dear Shusha, we are back!

Dear Shusha, we will revive you!

Shusha is ours! Karabakh is ours! Karabakh is Azerbaijan!"

President Ilham Aliyev stated in an interview with the Turkish TV channel A Haber on October 16, 2020, during the Patriotic War, that the liberation of Shusha from occupation was a goal. The head of state said: “My position has always been that without Shusha our mission would be half done. Therefore, of course, the liberation of Shusha occupies a special place among our goals."

The liberation of Shusha was the culmination of the 44-day war. Azerbaijani Armed Forces, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, showed high professionalism and unparalleled heroism, liberated Shusha from occupation on November 8, 2020, and achieved a historic victory in the war.

Many equipment, and manpower of the enemy were destroyed in the Shusha operation. Armenian Army was destroyed with liberation of Shusha, it had no power of resistance.

By losing Shusha, Armenia accepted being defeated in the war, and had to sign the act of capitulation.

Unique Shusha operation has fallen into world military history with unprecedented combat strategy and tactics. Many countries of the world, as well as leading military educational institutions now study new generation 44-day war, especially the Shusha operation by the Azerbaijani Army.

A medal “For liberation of Shusha” was established in the Republic of Azerbaijan in honor of liberation of Shusha from occupation.

Under the Order of President Ilham Aliyev, military servicemen, who participated combat operations for liberation of Shusha from occupation and demonstrated private heroism and courage, were awarded the medal “For liberation of Shusha”.

The day of liberation of Shusha from occupation – November 8 is celebrated in Azerbaijan as Day of Victory.

Note that Shusha was occupied by Armenian Armed Forces on May 8, 1992. During the occupation, 16 of 17 mosques, as well as other historical, cultural monuments, museums, statues, and cemeteries in the city of Shusha were destroyed. Palace of Panahali Khan, founder of city of Shusha, Vagif Mausoleum, House of Khurshidbanu Natavan, House Museums of Uzeyir Hajibayli, Bulbul, and many other cultural-historical buildings were razed to the ground.

Occupiers committed ecological terrorism against the rich nature of Shusha, types of rare trees and plants were cut down and burned.

Large-scale renovation and reconstruction work is underway in the city of Shusha now.
