Ninety-six percent of Azerbaijan’s territory is supplied with gas, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said during his speech at an event on the theme “Rebuilding Trust in a Fragmented World: The South Caucasus as a Pillar of Global Connectivity and Investment Stability,” held as part of the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum in Baku, APA reports.
The President said the country has one of the highest gasification rates.
“Ninety-six percent of Azerbaijan’s territory is supplied with gas. One hundred percent of the country’s population is provided with electricity and broadband internet. At the same time, we export electricity,” the head of state emphasized.
Ilham Aliyev noted that, in terms of domestic needs, almost all the work has been completed and there may not be much need for additional projects.
“Work on railway infrastructure has also been almost completed. We have nine international airports and seaports. Thus, when it comes to domestic infrastructure, we are in a good position,” the President said.
The head of state noted that infrastructure serving multinational interests could be more attractive. According to him, this primarily includes transportation, logistics and physical infrastructure, as well as administrative and digital infrastructure.
“We can build many bridges, overpasses and ships. However, if we do not properly take into account modern trends in digitalization and customs procedures, and if we do not facilitate and accelerate cargo handling, we will lose in the competition,” Ilham Aliyev emphasized.
The President said electricity transmission lines are another important area, noting that there is great potential in this field.
“Today, Azerbaijan is not the only source of energy. Less than two years ago, we signed an agreement with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on laying an underwater electricity cable across the Caspian Sea. The goal is to connect Central Asia with Azerbaijan and then with Europe through electricity,” the head of state said.
Ilham Aliyev said the implementation of this project will require significant financial resources.
The President noted that another important project is the Black Sea underwater electricity cable, which is already at the feasibility study stage.
“This cable will also run from Azerbaijan to Georgia and then to Romania. We are talking about a 4-gigawatt project aimed at the European energy market,” the head of state emphasized.
Ilham Aliyev also noted the need for energy storage systems.
“All this is necessary not only for us, but also for broader international cooperation. I think these will be the main areas of interest,” the President added.
