Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has shared a post about his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Viktor Yushchenko stated on his social media account, APA reports.
He noted that he had held an extremely sincere and substantive meeting with President Ilham Aliyev. Ukraine's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev also attended the meeting.
Speaking about the history of his friendship with Azerbaijan, Yushchenko said that it began in 1989, when he met Heydar Aliyev in Nakhchivan and established friendly relations with him.
"President Ilham Aliyev and I have been bound for more than 20 years by personal friendship and joint efforts aimed at strengthening Ukraine-Azerbaijan relations," Yushchenko noted.
The former Ukrainian President recalled that one of the important results of this cooperation was the formalization of the strategic partnership between the two countries. According to him, the Declaration on Friendship and Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan was signed on May 22, 2008, during President Ilham Aliyev's official visit to Kyiv.
"This document defined the strategic nature of our bilateral relations and created a solid foundation for their further development," Yushchenko emphasized.
He said that during the current meeting, the present and future of the two countries, the development of bilateral cooperation, as well as specific projects that the teams of both sides will continue to work on were discussed.
Yushchenko also thanked President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people for their consistent support for Ukraine, humanitarian assistance, care shown to Ukrainian children, and unwavering respect for his country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The former Ukrainian President expressed confidence that the strategic partnership, mutual trust and respect between Azerbaijan and Ukraine will continue to be reflected in important joint projects.
