At International Court of Justice Azerbaijan’s Deputy FM reveals reasons that prompted Azerbaijan to take anti-terrorist measures

Local anti-terrorist measures taken on September 19-20 were due to serious security threats caused by illegal Armenian military units in Garabagh, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov said in his remarks during the hearings regarding Armenia's appeal against Azerbaijan at the International Court of Justice, APA reports.

The Deputy FM noted that the trilateral statement of November 10, 2020 clearly stated a demand for Armenia to withdraw its forces from Garabagh in parallel with the deployment of Russian peacekeepers. However, Armenia continued to support illegal military formations on the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan for about three years:

"In July of this year, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia admitted that Armenian troops are still active in Garabagh and declared that they would withdraw in a few months, which actually never happened."

Elnur Mammadov noted that during the few weeks before the local anti-terrorist measures, the activities of the Armenian forces in Garabagh intensified to an alarming degree, these forces were brought to a state of combat readiness, prepared new battle fortifications, trenches and planted mines near the military positions of Azerbaijan.
