Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that she would vote for the dissolution of the Moldovan state and its unification with Romania if a referendum on the issue were held in the country, APA reports.
"If there were a referendum, I would vote to join Romania," Sandu said in an interview with British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell. Sandu justified her position by citing the country's size and the need to "stand up to Russia."
"Look at what's happening around Moldova today. Look at what's happening in the world. It's becoming increasingly difficult for a small country like Moldova to survive as a democracy, as a sovereign state, and, of course, to stand up to Russia," she explained. She acknowledged that while there isn't currently a majority in Moldova supporting unification with Romania, she believes the majority of citizens support joining the EU, so she considers this path "more realistic."
