Romania has expelled a member of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest in response to the repeated incursions of Russian drones into Romanian territory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced on Monday, Romania Journal reports.

According to the ministry, the Russian diplomat has been declared persona non grata and is required to leave Romania within five days. Russian Ambassador to Romania was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, where he was formally notified of the decision.

At the same time, Romania’s ambassador to Moscow will be called to the country for consultations. “On the instructions of Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Țoiu, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bucharest was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, July 27, 2026. The summons came as a firm response to the repeated violations of Romania’s airspace between July 24 and July 26, 2026, during which the Romanian Armed Forces shot down three drones that had entered the country’s territory without authorization.

During the meeting, the Russian diplomat was shown fragments of one of the drones destroyed on Romanian territory. Investigations conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office officially confirmed that the recovered components were of Russian origin. The Romanian side expressed its strongest protest against these illegal and irresponsible actions and made clear that responsibility for the incidents rests with the Russian Federation.

It was emphasized that it is absolutely unacceptable and intolerable for the Russian Federation to continue violating Romania’s airspace, which is also the airspace of both NATO and the European Union. The Romanian side stressed that Russia bears full responsibility for these serious incidents and for the deterioration of the regional security environment. During the meeting, the Russian ambassador was officially handed a diplomatic note informing him that a member of the Russian diplomatic mission in Bucharest had been declared unacceptable and must leave Romanian territory within five days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also recalled Romania’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation to Bucharest for consultations. Romania will continue to closely coordinate its response with its NATO and European Union allies and partners and remains firmly committed to taking all necessary measures to protect its national security and its citizens,” the ministry said in a statement.
