The Polish government has stated that Russia was behind a large-scale cyberattack targeting the country’s energy grid, Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said, APA reports, citing Euractiv.
According to the information, Warsaw managed to repel the attack, which took place during the Christmas holiday period.
Gawkowski said that during the attack, the country’s energy system faced the risk of collapse.
“This was the largest attack against the energy sector in recent years and could have caused nationwide power outages at the end of December,” the minister said.
He added that according to a 2025 report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Russia’s sabotage activities against Europe’s critical infrastructure have intensified in recent years.
Gawkowski emphasized that the nature of warfare is changing and has already shifted into the digital domain.
“There is no need for troops on Poland’s streets or for planes to fly or tanks to advance, because ‘digital tanks’ are already here,” the minister noted.
