Following consultations with Washington administration officials, Danish authorities were unable to persuade the latter to abandon its efforts to annex Greenland to the United States, said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen at a press conference in Washington, APA reports.
"We were unable to change the American position. It is clear that the President wants to conquer Greenland. We have made it very clear that this is not in the Kingdom's interests," he said. Rasmussen added that Greenlandic representatives have also made it clear that it "will remain part of the Kingdom of Denmark for the foreseeable future." "Therefore, the general position is that we want to cooperate with our American friends and allies, but this cooperation must be respectful and take into account red lines," the Danish Foreign Minister emphasized.
