In order to clarify the subsequent fate of citizens who went missing due to Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan, search, excavation and exhumation works in the territories liberated from occupation are ongoing by the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons along with relevant state institutions and ANAMA, the State Commission told APA.

It was noted that the planting of landmines, installation of mine-traps, as well as excessive contamination of territories with unexploded ordnance by Armenia during the period of occupation and even during the post-coflict period, create a serious obstacle to the search, excavation and exhumation works on the grave sites presumed to be belonging to missing persons in addition to delaying the restoration and reconstruction works in the region, the process of the return of former internally displaced persons to their lands.

"In most cases, a long time is required for the demining of the territories for the expert staff to work on grave sites presumed to be belonging to the missing persons known by the State Commission. This situation, which has caused an increase in the suffering and loss of hope of the citizens who are waiting for their loved ones who have been missing for more than thirty years, is the clear example of Armenia's disrespect for the international humanitarian law.

The State Commission strongly condemns Armenia's mine terror, which causes the death and injury of the civilians and hinders the clarification of the subsequent fate of citizens who went missing."
