Russia considers Turkey’s planned ground operation in Syria to be a premature step. This was announced on December 17 by Yury Pilipson, Director of the Fourth European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“In general, we believe that such an operation is premature, it can lead to a further escalation of the situation, stimulate separatist sentiments and aggravate the armed confrontation,” he said in an interview with TASS.
Pilipson noted that the general staffs and intelligence agencies of the Russian Federation and Turkey maintain close contact on this topic. According to him, Moscow is sympathetic to Ankara’s sensitive issues of protecting Turkey’s southern borders, but proceeds from the need for strict observance of the principles of territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Syria.
