Nursultan Nazarbayev is no longer Elbasy, APA reports citing  “informburo.kz”.

The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan decided to invalidate the law “On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, thanks to which the first president of independent Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was proclaimed the leader of the nation (elbasy).

Nazarbayev was the president of Kazakhstan for a record 28 years. And he left the presidency in 2019. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev became his successor.

The explanatory note to the decision states that “at present, the Constitution has no legal basis for preserving the law “On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan” in the current law of the Republic of Kazakhstan. And so the law becomes invalid.”

The law “On the first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan” was passed in 2000 and was finalized several times.

Its cancellation was not a surprise: earlier, the president of the Majlis (the lower house of the Kazakh parliament), Yerlan Koshanov, announced plans to review the operation of this law, which granted Nazarbayev a series of privileges and powers.
