A source in the General Intelligence Service told SANA on Sunday that a terrorist plot to target the Homs refinery has been foiled.
The Homs refinery plays an important role alongside the Baniyas refinery in securing petroleum derivatives for the local market.
Last October, the atmospheric distillation unit “10” was rehabilitated and maintained with a design capacity of one million tons of crude oil annually, enhancing the refinery’s production capabilities and supporting the availability of diesel, fuel oil and kerosene in the local market.
The Homs refinery is one of Syria’s two main refineries and a critical piece of energy infrastructure.
The foiled plot comes amid a series of security operations targeting terrorist cells across the country, including an ISIS-linked cell arrested in Deir Ezzor for assassinations and another cell dismantled in Homs countryside in October.
