A member of parliament in Iran criticized the government over the drying of Lake Urmia, APA reports, citing Iranian media.

Parliamentarian Hojjat-ul-Islam Bagheri called on the government to take urgent measures.

“The time for talking is over; it is time for action. People are tired of populist measures and slogans. Lake Urmia has dried up due to the inaction of past and present officials. This lake was a symbol of life and hope, and its drying represents death and despair for the people. Reviving Lake Urmia is not possible through the plans of local officials; a specific law must be drafted. The problem and the solution are both clear. It is time to make a decision in order to take action. Over the past twenty years, the body responsible for reviving Lake Urmia has only contributed to its drying. Reviving this lake is possible only through the adoption of a comprehensive law. The people’s demand from the government is to draft a project related to this,” the parliamentarian said.

Another member of parliament, Ruhullah Motefakker Azad, also sharply criticized the drying of Lake Urmia and the negligence of those responsible. According to him, the efforts to revive Lake Urmia have been ineffective, and the lake is currently turning into a salt mine.

The MP added that salt is accumulating on the dried lake bed, and when mixed with dust, it negatively affects areas within a 500-kilometer radius.

Note that Lake Urmia, once considered the largest lake in the Middle East, has dried up by 95%. Sandstorms are putting agriculture and human health in surrounding areas at risk. Experts warn that unless fundamental reforms are implemented, millions of people will be exposed to toxic salt storms.
