Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highly appreciated the relations between the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan, APA's Tehran bureau reports.
Araghchi spoke about President Masoud Pezeshkian's approach to the position of neighboring countries.
He said that Iran's foreign policy is of a continuous nature and can be implemented with certain initiatives and different methods of dialogue during the tenure of different governments, but the basic principles remain unchanged.
Araghchi noted that during the Pezeshkian government, more priority was given to neighboring countries.
"We have determined our priority so that first of all, peace and security are ensured around us, and then opportunities for economic, political and cultural cooperation with neighbors are created," Araghchi said.
Araghchi also touched on Pezeshkian's personal belief in unity among Muslim countries.
He said that in Pezeshkian's numerous meetings with leaders of neighboring Muslim countries, the importance of unity among the Islamic Ummah was particularly emphasized.
The Minister highly appreciated the communication between the Iranian and Azerbaijani presidents and noted that Pezeshkian attaches great importance to dialogue, direct communication and speaking.
“When the President visited the Republic of Azerbaijan, our relations, which were accompanied by certain ups and downs and some problems, completely changed during that visit thanks to his direct communication with the President of Azerbaijan,” Aragchi said.
Aragchi then continued: “It was during the last war that one day a problem arose in our relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan that strained relations to some extent. President Pezeshkian’s telephone conversation with the President of Azerbaijan, his sincere greeting in Azerbaijani, and the use of several Azerbaijani proverbs completely changed the situation.”
The Iranian Foreign Minister also added that Iran’s relations with other neighboring countries, including Central Asia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east of the country, and Türkiye and Iraq to the west, are still good.
