“After visiting Kathmandu and a province to the north, I've seen firsthand the destruction caused by this earthquake," Lenhardt said on Tuesday. "My announcement today brings the total US commitment to nearly $26 million and represents our steadfast commitment to the people of Nepal."
On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and a series of aftershocks caused massive destruction across Nepal, killing more than 7,000 people and injuring 14,000 people, the UN estimates.
Lenhardt explained the assistance will be used to help provide individuals in remote locations of Nepal with emergency supplies, including medical supplies, safe drinking water and hygiene kits.
The US military is also helping with supporting the agency’s Disaster Assistance Response Team in Nepal, which was sent to the country after the earthquake to coordinate their response efforts, according to USAID.
Some 3.5 million people are currently in need of food assistance and thousands have been left homeless in the disaster, according to the UN.
