The victory Azerbaijan gained at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku was not accidental, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Tuesday.

He made the remarks while addressing a meeting with the country’s athletes, who won the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games, their coaches, and representatives of Azerbaijan’s sports community, APA reported.

"More than 50 countries participated in the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games and they had sent their most professional athletes, which increase the importance of our victory,” said the president. “Of course, we all know that this victory was not accidental, because our athletes have already demonstrated their strength in various international competitions, world and European championships and Azerbaijan is known worldwide as a strong sports country.”

The head of state said that the achievements suggest that this victory is not an accidental one.

"Only in developed countries does sport earn both the state and the people great success. Every time our flag is raised and our national anthem is played, every patriotic man feels proud,” President Aliyev said.

According to him, sport holds a special place in the social life of every country and the development of sport leads to excellent results.

“We are rightly proud of our victories and every time we gain a great victory we see that more people being to show interest in sports. Children and teens begin going to sports clubs, desiring to be like you. When the younger generation sees that athletes are given value and reward, they grow in interest in sports,” he added.
