Some 197 Azerbaijanis are registered as missing in the aftermath of the genocide committed by Armenians in the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly on 26 February 1992, Ismail Akhundov, head of the working group of the State Commission of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, told reporters on Friday, APA reported.
He said there are testimonies of witnesses that 95 people of them were captivated or taken hostage. “Twelve of them are children,” he noted.
According to him, as many as 3,868 people are listed as missing as a result of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “1,437 people including 210 children have already been released from captivity,” he said.
He noted that nearly 180 unmarked graves were discovered on the basis of investigation conducted by the working group.
“These are the graves of martyrs. The exhumation will be conducted in the future,” Akhundov added.
On February 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces, together with the 366th infantry regiment of Soviet troops, stationed in Khankendi, committed an act of genocide against the population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly. As many as 613 people, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old people were killed as a result of the massacre. Eight families were totally exterminated, 130 children lost one parent and 25 children lost both. A total of 487 civilians became disabled as a result of the onslaught. Some 1,275 innocent residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 people still remains unknown.
