Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed formally pulled his 14-year-old son, Ahmed Mohamed, from the MacArthur High School of Irving Independent School District (IISD), according to the Dallas Morning News.
“Ahmed said, I don’t want to go to MacArthur,” said his father, who also withdrew Ahmed's younger brother and sister from their schools in the area.
The Sudanese Muslim teen made international headlines last week when he was handcuffed, arrested and fingerprinted by police after a homemade clock he brought to the school was mistaken for a bomb.
The incident took place at a time when a rising wave of Islamophobia has exacerbated the debate around religious freedoms across the U.S.
His detention has been widely criticized on social media and the charges against him were eventually dropped days later, as Ahmed received messages of support from a number of high-profile figures including President Barack Obama.
On Wednesday, Ahmed plans to fly to New York to meet United Nations dignitaries, his father told Dallas Morning News.
After that, his father hopes to take Ahmed on a pilgrimage to Mecca, the newspaper said.
