Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloghlu – APA. Aftershocks are expected after the strong earthquake that occurred in the country on Sept.4. More than 15 tremors measured 2.7 on Richter scale or less have been recorded so far. Perhaps, aftershocks will last several months, Gurban Yetirmishli, the director general of the Republican Seismological Service Center of Azerbaijan’s National Academy of Sciences, Gurban Yetirmishli told APA on Sept.4.
Some of these tremors may be palpable, because after such strong tremors a dynamic break occurs in the earthquake focus, Yetirmishli said. “Experience shows that such aftershocks may continue for a long time, but I don’t expect that a 7-magnitute earthquake will occur again.”
There was a seismological activity in northwest regions of Azerbaijan, and a 3-magnitute earthquake occurred in Sheki city a few days ago, Yetirmishli said, adding that tension was being accumulated in the Sheki-Zagatala region but no one could predict an earthquake might happen this morning.
“As for the fact that the quake was noticed in the majority of Azerbaijan’s districts, it is due to tension breaks. There are 4-5 tension breaks down there – three of which stretches to Nakhchivan, the Talish Mountains, and the Absheron Peninsula. The tremor happens as a result of total movement of the rivers Vandam, Akhvay, Samur-Arpachay, Alazan Eyrichay. And also, this core is not accidental. There have been 6- to 7-magnitude earthquakes in that region in 1953 and 1963,” he noted.
Yetirmishli said the epicenter was 15 km in depth and 15 seconds in duration.
“This duration is not little in terms of the waves spreading across the country. Therefore, the quake was noticed in the country’s faraway districts,” he said.
Note that, a 7-magnitude earthquake has occurred in Sheki district today. The tremors were recorded 6 to 3 magnitude in other districts.
