Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. “In the 1990s, Gorbachev, Yazov and Primakov divided Azerbaijan and were seeking to formalize that. They wanted to attach “radical Islam” label to Azerbaijan and to tear the country apart,” Sheikh-ul-Islam Haji Allahshukur Pashazade, Chairman of the Caucasian Muslim Office (CMO), stated during a meeting with families of the 20 January martyrs, APA reports.

He noted that the people did not allow this to happen, stating their position. Azerbaijan has already proved itself as a tolerant country: “The 20 January tragedy proved that the people were determined to fight in this cause. Allah had decreed the 20 January as heroism for us”.

The CMO chairman also spoke about what had happened next day.

“We were under pressure so much so that they were even trying to prevent us from burying those slain. They said it’s not allowed in Upland Park and that everyone should be buried in a cemetery. They are even against us calling them martyrs. This all happened because of the inexperience of the leadership at that time. Because the ruler at the time was a slave of the empire,” he added.

A. Pashazade said this problem too was solved as Heydar Aliyev came to power. “With Allah the Almighty in the sky and Heydar Aliyev on earth, justice was served, and they were granted the status of martyrdom. However, the world community has not yet given a legal assessment to this event,” he underlined.
