Construction of the railway that will connect the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to the Zangezur Corridor is continuing by Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, APA's local bureau reports.

One of the key aspects of the project is the reconstruction and modernization of railway infrastructure in accordance with modern requirements.

Currently, construction work is progressing rapidly on a 7-kilometer section between Zarani and Salammalik stations, from the Azerbaijan–Armenia border toward Ordubad. Along the railway line, which has a total length of 194 kilometers, the reconstruction of 10 stations and three passenger platforms, as well as the construction and restoration of numerous bridges, tunnels, and other engineering structures, is planned.

Deputy Director of Nakhchivan Railways LLC Musa Aliyev stated that the reconstruction of Nakhchivan's railways is specifically included in the "State Program on the Socio-Economic Development of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for 2023–2027": "Currently, work in this direction is progressing rapidly in the autonomous republic. The project assignment for the design and reconstruction of new railway tracks in the area starting from the border and extending from Salammalik station toward Julfa station has already been completed, and implementation has begun. Meanwhile, the design work for the railway on the Julfa–Sadarak section is almost complete."

He emphasized that reconstruction work is currently underway on the railway from the Armenian border toward Salammalik station:

"On the 7-kilometer section, the materials of the railway's superstructure have been dismantled and removed, and work on laying the new track is continuing. Bridges, culverts, drainage structures, hillside channels, and drainage ditches have been constructed, and retaining walls have been reinforced. In addition, a rail-and-sleeper track structure has already been laid over a distance of more than 6 kilometers and covered with a layer of crushed stone. The rails are high-quality materials imported from the Republic of Türkiye, while the sleepers have been brought from Shabran. God willing, in the very near future, with the commissioning of the Zangezur Corridor, the reconstruction of railways in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic will be completed. I hope that train services on Nakhchivan's railways will resume very soon. We have truly missed the movement of trains and the rhythmic clatter of wheels on the rails. God willing, this longing will soon come to an end."

Musa Aliyev noted that steps are being taken to restore normal and safe train operations in the autonomous republic:

"The reconstruction work being carried out on the 7-kilometer section is being implemented to a high standard. As envisaged in the project, trains will be able to travel at speeds of 120 km/h in Nakhchivan."
