Azerbaijan commemorates 142nd birth anniversary of Mahammad Amin Rasulzade

Today marks the 142nd anniversary of the birth of prominent social and political figure, one of the founders of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, and Chairman of the Azerbaijan National Council, Mahammad Amin Rasulzade, APA reports.

Mahammad Amin Rasulzade was born on January 31, 1884, in the village of Novkhani near Baku.

At a young age, he took part in the formation of the “Hummet” organization together with social democrats. Persecuted by the Tsarist regime, Rasulzadeh emigrated to Iran in 1909, where he worked for a time as editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Irane-nou.” After the Constitutional Revolution was suppressed, he emigrated to Türkiye.

In 1911, he became a member of the Musavat Party, and four years later he was elected Chairman of the Central Committee of the Musavat Party.

In 1918, together with Fatali Khan Khoyski, he officially announced the establishment of the first republic in the East. After the Bolshevik occupation on April 28, 1920, he was arrested. Soon afterward, by Stalin’s order, he was released and taken to Moscow. Despite Stalin’s insistence, he refused to cooperate with the Soviet authorities and left the USSR.

Mahammad Amin Rasulzade died on March 6, 1955, in Ankara.

On December 24, 1992, Azerbaijani President Abulfaz Elchibey signed an order “On the return to Azerbaijan of the family members of prominent social and political figure Mahammad Amin Rasulzade who were subjected to repression during the totalitarian Soviet regime, and on resolving their social and living issues.”

On December 29, 1993, Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev signed an order “On holding the 110th anniversary of the birth of Azerbaijan’s prominent public and political figure Mahammad Amin Rasulzade.”

On November 22, 2013, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on celebrating the 130th anniversary of Mahammad Amin Rasulzade. In accordance with the order, a series of anniversary events were held both in the republic and abroad.

Also, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, President Ilham Aliyev declared 2018 the “Year of the Republic.”

On December 30, 2023, President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on celebrating the 140th anniversary of Mahammad Amin Rasulzade.
