There is no increase in the number of less serious crimes in Azerbaijan, said Yusif Safarov, chairman of the Criminal Board of the Azerbaijani Supreme Court.

He made the remarks addressing a meeting of the Union of Associations of Judges in Baku March 4.

Safarov said there are some shortcomings in the election of a preventive measure in the form of arrest, noting that these issues will be discussed at the plenum of the Supreme Court.

He also mentioned the problems with an extension of the period of detention.

“An investigator writes a reference and a court upholds it, but the investigator fails to commit the investigation as he/she hopes there is still time before the expiration of the period of detention. It is not necessary to rewrite the Criminal Code’s articles in the indictment. If there is an alternative to arrest sentence, it should be applied,” added Safarov.
