Measures are continuing to ensure the reliable protection of the state border and prevent smuggling and illegal crossings of the state border, the Press Center of the State Border Service told APA.
It was reported that a border patrol guarding the state border in the service area of the Goytepe border detachment of the Border Troops of the State Border Service observed border violators moving from the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The border outpost was immediately put on alert under the "To Arms" command, the area was cordoned off, and necessary measures were taken to prevent the violation of the state border.
The border violators were pursued after being ordered to stop, and warning shots were fired into the air. One of the border violators, who failed to comply with the order, put up armed resistance and opened fire with the intention of killing the border guards.
In order to detain the individual who ignored the lawful demands of the border guards, firearms were used in accordance with the requirements of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On the State Border", and the border violator was neutralized.
The Iranian side was informed of the incident through the border representative channel.
A criminal case has been initiated in connection with the incident, and necessary joint operational-search and investigative measures are currently being carried out by the State Border Service and the Military Prosecutor's Office.
