After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the region experienced political disasters and upheavals, said former Prime Minister of Lebanon Fouad Siniora.

He made the remarks at a panel session titled "Regional Security, Regional Peace: Middle East," which was held as part of the 6th Global Baku Forum in Baku on March 16, APA reports.

“After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the region experienced political disasters and upheavals. There have been interventions in the region, and this has been observed on three continents. All this became widespread after the 1940s,” he noted.

Ex-PM Siniora stressed that the unresolved Palestinian conflict lies at the root of the ongoing developments in the region.

He also touched on the processes going on in Iran.

“The Iranian Revolution took place in 1979. At the same time, the Soviet Union entered Afghanistan. The course of all these processes intensified after the events in Iran. After the revolution in Iran, the tension in the region began to take radical extreme forms. Today, Iran's leaders think they can very easily meddle in the internal affairs of any state and that they have the right to do so. What does this mean for you? In my opinion, the answer to the question is clear. For the last 8 years we have been witnessing serious horrors in Syria. Unless we resolve this, the horror, the conflict will spread in a wider geography,” the former Lebanese PM added.
