Former US envoy to UN: Conflicts around the world will increase

A panel session, titled “Power: Big Powers And The Rest” was held as part of the 6th Global Baku Forum in Baku on March 15.

The panel was moderated by Serbia’s ex-president (2004-2012) Boris TadiÄ‡, APA reported, APA reports.

TadiÄ‡ said what he means by big powers are the US, Russia and China.

"We will talk about the impact on the global balance of foreign policy strategies chosen by the US, Russia and China,” he added.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali YÄ±ldÄ±rÄ±m stressed the need for a more extensive promotion of Nizami Ganjavi’s values, saying that the distances between countries are shrinking as the world is developing.

"Armed conflicts, wars and terror are a problem for everyone. No country can fight alone. A common position should be displayed against terrorism,” the Turkish PM noted.

Co-Chair of Nizami Ganjavi International Center and former President of the Republic of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga noted that if people’s desire to live is respect, conflicts will not occur.

President of Gryphon Partners and Khalilzad Associates, former US ambassador to the United Nations (2007-2009) Zalmay Khalilzad said that China has already the second big economic power, and this country’s military power is increasing day by day.

"But China fails in becoming the main dominant power in Asia. The US security strategy and military strategy focuses on ensuring a balance of power. In this case, the US is growing its military power. Although Russia's economic strength has diminished, President Vladimir Putin is striving for Russia to become a great power. President Donald Trump, in turn, is trying to turn the US into a great power. How can cooperation exist in this condition? Unfortunately, conflicts around the world will increase, rather than decrease,” he added.

Sergey Karaganov, dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at Moscow's Higher School of Economics, Honorary Chairman of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, said that the West has been dominating the world for 500 years, while Russia began dominating at expense of its military power since 16th century.

“Now they are trying to rebuild bipolar world. After a while, there will be two superpowers in the world. On one hand, the US and Europe and on the other, the Eurasian Union, in which China, Russia, Turkey, Iran and India will take an active part. In this case, small nations will become freer. I'm optimistic about the future," he said.

Mei Zahaorong, former president of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, vice chairman of China Institute of International Strategic Studies stressed that significant events are taking place in the world.
