US supports opening of transport links that will serve the well-being of the South Caucasus region - Ambassador

"The United States supports comprehensive peace in the region and the opening of transport links that will serve the well-being of the entire region," US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lee Litzenberger said at a roundtable dedicated to the 30th anniversary of US-Azerbaijani diplomatic relations, APA reports.

The ambassador said the United States wants to see all three countries of the South Caucasus stronger, more stable, and more independent.

"We also want to see an increase in regional cooperation, which may take some time. However we are ready to support bringing the parties together on any issue, "the ambassador said.

Lee Litzenberger has noted that the US plays an important role in the normalization of relations in the post-conflict period.

“First exchange of detained Armenians with maps of mined territories has been conducted at our initiative. There is much work to do in both fields. I am glad to see progress over the recent times on 4,000 Azerbaijanis, became missing at the beginning of 90s, First Karabakh War. We have always urged both sides to participate in measures aimed at the establishment of confidence,” Diplomat noted.

Ambassador has stressed that all issues regarding demarcation of borders, detained Armenians, cleaning of territories from mines, opening of transport corridors, missing persons need to be solved.

The diplomat has added that the US is ready to participate in process of development of relations between the sides in the case of opportunity.
