"The memorial day of Heydar Aliyev is the day when the entire history of modern Azerbaijan passes before your eyes, and you understand how heavy a burden he took on," said Mikhail Shvydkoy, special representative of the Russian President for international cultural cooperation, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.
M.Shvydkoy, who participated in the commemorative event organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Russia, recalled how Azerbaijan fell into a dramatic situation after the collapse of the USSR, and how the country was on the verge of disintegration during the military riots:
"We don't fully understand it. But this was the reality. The country was facing the danger of collapse every day... Heydar Aliyev really risked his life then. In this sense, Heydar Aliyev was a missionary. He understood his mission, his duty to the people of Azerbaijan.
I have great respect for the work done after he left, what Ilham Aliyev did. But Heydar Aliyev's work is a mythological event. Heydar Aliyev is respected all over the world. He was a bright minded, improvisational person.
This happens only to those who feel their historical mission... When Vladimir Putin became the President of the Russian Federation, he met with Heydar Aliyev. It was a very important, valuable, friendly relationship, and fortunately, it also extended to relations with Ilham Aliyev. This is very important for Russia. I bow before the memory of Heydar Aliyev," said the Russian diplomat.
