MFA: Azerbaijani members of the crew of ship that crashed in Tunisia were released

The Azerbaijani members of the crew of the ship that crashed near the city of Gabes in Tunisia have been released, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MFA) told APA.

After the negotiations and verdict, two Azerbaijani citizens left Tunisia.

“As it is known, on April 16, 2022, the ship "Xelo" sailing under the flag of Equatorial Guinea near the city of Gabes in the Republic of Tunisia crashed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Two of the ship's 7-person crew- Fedail Safarov and Ali Panahli were citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Crew members of the ship have been detained by law-enforcement bodies of the Republic of Tunisia since the incident day for investigation and legal assessment.

Official appeals have been addressed to the relevant public bodies of the Republic of Tunisia by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, meetings have been held with appropriate state bodies of the Republic of Tunisia for provision of our citizens with necessary consolatory assistance, detained crew members of the ship have been visited. At the same time, contact has been kept with the owner company of the ship, and negotiations have been held on the issue of delivery of legal and financial aid to our citizens in a difficult situation.

A verdict was adopted on freedom of crew members of the crashed ship in the last trial in Gabes First Instance Court on August 10, 2022. Our citizens left the territory of the Republic of Tunisia on August 21, 2022.

Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue taking necessary measures in the direction of protection of rights and freedoms of its citizens regardless of their venue in accordance with national legislation and international agreements, supported by our country,” noted in the statement of the Ministry.
