Democratic member of House of Representatives of the US Congress, Co-chairman of Working Group on Azerbaijan Steve Cohen, representing the State of Tennessee, has made a statement on the occasion of Independence Day of Azerbaijan, APA reports.
Congressman noted in his statement that Azerbaijan established the first democratic, secular, parliamentary republic in 1918 in the Muslim World and it was recognized by the Administration of President Woodrow Wilson. Although the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan collapsed in 1920, the statement noted that it was the first Muslim state to grant women suffrage.
