In the first half of the current year, the trade turnover between Hungary and Azerbaijan has doubled compared to the entire period of last year, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó said at the joint press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Budapest, APA reports.
Péter Szijjártó emphasized that relations between the two countries are of great importance in terms of maintaining economic growth. According to the minister, the main reason for the increase in trade turnover is the continuous expansion of Hungary's pharmaceutical products export and energy import.
In his remarks, he welcomed the agreement that Hungarian companies can be involved in the reconstruction of the Garabagh region.
Minister Szijjártó said that two local pharmaceutical companies are about to invest in Azerbaijan, and recently Hell Energy is also planning to build a plant worth about 200 million dollars in Azerbaijan.
"I remember when we started building relations with Azerbaijan in 2010-2011, we were looked down on in Europe. That's why it's funny to see how Western European leaders are now pushing each other to take a picture with President Aliyev in Baku," the Hungarian FM noted.
"However, our friendship with Azerbaijan does not depend on the economic situation, we were friends with this country even before the natural gas sources of Azerbaijan were discovered," he concluded.
