Foreign Ministry Spokesperson: Work has commenced on preparation of Strategic Partnership Charter with US

“Since the first days of restoring its independence, Azerbaijan has established mutually beneficial cooperation with the United States," said Aykhan Hajizade, Head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, in an interview with APA.

According to him, although these cooperative relations weakened considerably during the previous administration, President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to the U.S. in August holds historic significance in terms of elevating relations between the two countries to the level of strategic partnership: “During the visit, an Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of a Strategic Working Group for the Preparation of a Strategic Partnership Charter between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States of America was signed by the two presidents. Within this framework, the preparation of a Strategic Partnership Charter, which will define the main directions of our cooperation over the next six months, is envisaged. The priority areas of the Strategic Working Group are energy, trade and regional connectivity; digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence; defense, security, counter-terrorism, and other mutually interesting fields. This demonstrates Azerbaijan and the U.S.’s commitment to cooperation not only in words but also through real projects.”

The MFA spokesperson noted that significant results were also achieved in the energy sector within the framework of the visit: “A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between SOCAR and ExxonMobil with the participation of the U.S. President’s Special Envoy. This document will expand cooperation opportunities in both conventional and non-conventional energy projects, strengthen our energy security, and create new opportunities for regional cooperation.

The composition representing the Azerbaijani side for the implementation of the mentioned agreements has been determined. Work has commenced on the preparation of the Strategic Partnership Charter. Currently, the relevant Working Group is operating on the preparation of the said Strategic Partnership Charter. We are hopeful that the implementation of the mentioned agreements will further strengthen relations between our countries.”
